A Musical Journey from Piano to Pedagogy
My name is Michael Robert, and I'm the music teacher here at Sino Canada School. My educational background is in piano—I did my undergraduate degree in piano at the University of British Columbia, and then I completed a second degree in music education. Altogether, I've been studying music for over 20 years now.
A Teaching Philosophy Built on Perseverance and High Expectations
I would describe my teaching style as fair, but I would also say that I hold high expectations for my students. I think I have a lot of perseverance as a teacher because I know that my students—even if they're beginners—are capable of creating music at a very high level. I always want to keep pushing them to succeed, so if something doesn't work, I'm going to try another way and try again until we all succeed and create a good level of music together.
From the Ice to the Keys: A Hidden Talent Revealed
A hidden talent of mine is that I used to be a figure skater before I chose to focus on piano. I used to compete and took lessons regularly, but eventually it became too much for me to balance both piano and figure skating at a competitive level. So I chose piano instead, and I've never looked back.
